Bonus! They’re all universal languages.
Berating is a language of those leading by bullying, dictatorship, or force. It is a language of no, of control. Even if it changes a recipient’s behavior, it risks creating adequacy-not-excellence, resentment, and conflict. It often inspires harshness, fear, mediocrity, blind obedience, or rebellion.
Silence, depending upon context and interpretation, can be agreement, disagreement, diplomacy, or apathy – lack of leadership. It is a language of perhaps, and bends to prevailing winds.
Praise is a language of leading by persuasion, democracy, and freedom. It is a language of yes, of empowerment. It promotes dialogue, generosity, joy, enthusiastic cooperation, and creativity. It removes a spotlight from undesirable behavior, and illuminates the desirable. It inspires to ever greater heights, and infinite possibilities.
Knowledge knows these languages. Understanding, that they can all be used for ill or for good. And wisdom translates which situations merit which language.
